Preakness Hot Air Balloon Festival
Do any of you ever check out the “events popular in your area” page on Facebook? Every time I do I can’t believe everything that’s going on around me that I’m just finding out about! This is what led to a spontaneous 2 hour drive to Ellicott City, Maryland with my boyfriend (Dylan) and 2 other friends (Michael and Abby) to a hot air balloon festival and let me tell ya, it was pretty hectic.
What we knew going into this:
- Tethered balloon rides were only $20 and if you ask me that’s a pretty cheap way to get a pretty expensive thing off your bucket list
- Parking was $10 and cars would be turned away from the parking lot starting at 7:30 p.m
It was 5:00. Our day was pretty chaotic from the get-go. Abby was running late so she ended up deciding to just meet us there and drive the entire two hours alone. Dylan and I quickly went to pick Michael up before Dylan realized he forgot the go pro… so we had to go ALL THE WAY back to my house and at this point it was already 5:30. We really needed to hurry if we didn’t want to be turned away at parking. Somehow, someway we managed to pick abby up near the venue and make it to the parking lot and get in line for the shuttle.
Not even 5 minutes went by before people start turning around from the front of the line saying they’re starting to turn people away because the event was too full. Perfect right? Drove a whole two hours to be told to go home :-). Nah, sorry but we weren’t gonna take no for an answer. We (and 100 other people) found a neighborhood near the event and managed to walk right into the festival. It didn’t even seem full at all!
Unfortunately we didn’t get to ride one of the balloons because the lines were just insane 🙁 . That was a bummer but we made the most of it and stayed to watch the balloon glow they were having.
I guess we’re going to have to save checking off “riding a hot air balloon” off of our bucket list for another day..
